MBBS Course 2026: Full Form, Duration, Fees, Eligibility, Admission, Subjects, Colleges & Salary

MBBS (Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery) is the main undergraduate medical degree for students who want to train as doctors in modern medicine in India. The standard MBBS pathway is approximately 5.5 years, consisting of 4.5 years of academic and clinical medical education followed by a one-year compulsory rotating medical internship.
Admission is based on NEET UG, followed by the applicable MCC or state counselling process. NEET qualification alone does not guarantee an MBBS seat; the actual college available depends on NEET AIR, category, counselling quota, domicile or institutional eligibility, seat availability and preference order. NTA describes NEET UG as the common and uniform entrance examination for undergraduate medical education.

What Is MBBS?
MBBS is an undergraduate professional medical programme designed to build the scientific knowledge, clinical skills, communication ability and practical competence required for medical practice.
Unlike a normal classroom-focused bachelor's degree, MBBS combines basic sciences, laboratory learning, practical demonstrations, hospital postings, patient interaction, clinical examinations and compulsory internship.
NMC currently lists the Competency Based Medical Education (CBME) Curriculum 2024 as part of its undergraduate regulatory framework. The curriculum emphasises competencies, clinical exposure and practical medical training rather than theory alone.

MBBS Full Form
The full form of MBBS is Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery.
Although the name contains β€œMedicine” and β€œSurgery”, MBBS is awarded as a single undergraduate medical qualification, not as two separate bachelor's degrees.

Is Internship Included in MBBS Duration?
Yes. The one-year compulsory rotating medical internship forms an integral part of medical training.
During internship, students move through clinical departments under supervision and gain practical experience in patient care, wards, emergency services and other prescribed postings. NMC separately maintains the Compulsory Rotating Medical Internship Regulations within its undergraduate regulatory framework.

Important MBBS Fee Rule in 2026
NMC issued a 7 April 2026 clarification on fees chargeable for the MBBS course duration. The clarification addresses the practice of charging tuition beyond the academic MBBS period and is especially important when families compare private-college fee schedules
The practical rule for students is simple: do not blindly calculate MBBS tuition by multiplying one year's tuition by 5.5 years. Read the institution's current official fee schedule and identify exactly how many academic instalments are chargeable.

Additional Subjects
Permitted under the conditions specified in the current NEET bulletin
The 2026 bulletin's qualifying-examination framework is more nuanced than many old β€œMBBS eligibility” pages suggest. It specifically recognises candidates who study the required subjects as additional subjects after passing Class 12 from a recognised board, provided the required documentary conditions are met.

What Percentage Is Required in Class 12 for MBBS?
Do not rely on an old generic 50%/45%/40% PCB table copied from outdated MBBS articles without checking the current rule applicable to the candidate.
The current NEET UG 2026 bulletin should be treated as the primary examination reference for the qualifying examination, subjects and eligibility route. Candidates should match their exact Class 12 qualification to the relevant qualifying-examination code and current counselling rules rather than relying on an old percentage chart.

Can PCB Subjects Be Taken as Additional Subjects?
Yes, under the current NEET framework.
The bulletin allows the prescribed Physics, Chemistry, Biology/Biotechnology and English subjects to be studied as additional subjects after Class 12 from duly recognised boards, subject to documentary proof and the conditions specified in the bulletin.

What Is the Age Limit for MBBS in India?
For NEET UG 2026, a candidate must satisfy the minimum-age requirement applicable to admission.
A student needs to complete 17 years on or before 31 December of the admission year. The 2026 eligibility material does not impose a general upper-age ceiling for NEET UG.
Age eligibility, however, is normally far easier to satisfy than the competitive hurdle of obtaining the AIR needed for a preferred government or private medical college.

Is NEET Compulsory for MBBS?
Yes. NEET UG is compulsory for MBBS admission in India under the current national system. For the complete route from NEET result to allotment and joining, use MBBS Admission 2026.
NTA states that NEET UG is the common and uniform entrance examination for undergraduate medical education in all medical institutions.
This means students should be cautious about claims such as:
  • β€œdirect MBBS admission without NEET”;
  • β€œmanagement MBBS without NEET”; or
  • β€œprivate MBBS without NEET”.
Management, NRI, private and deemed-university seats can have different fees and closing ranks, but they do not remove the NEET requirement.

NEET UG 2026: Latest MBBS Admission Numbers
NEET UG remains one of India's largest competitive entrance examinations.
NTA's official 2026 data reports:

NEET UG 2026
Candidates
Registered

19,99,895

NTA's official NEET UG 2026 score-card page was published on 16 July 2026, and the agency's 2026 public-notice section carries the result press release and key-data documents.

What Do These Numbers Mean?
Qualifying NEET and obtaining a preferred MBBS seat are two very different achievements.
More than 11 lakh candidates qualified, but the competition becomes much sharper when students specifically target low-fee government MBBS seats, leading AIIMS institutions, highly preferred state colleges or premium private institutions.

How Many MBBS Seats Are There in India in 2026?
NMC published its 2026–27 undergraduate MBBS seat matrix on 14 July 2026. Importantly, NMC labels this matrix as excluding Institutes of National Importance (INIs)
The published matrix contains about 1.37 lakh MBBS seats under the NMC matrix. The figure should not be casually presented as an all-inclusive count of every MBBS seat in India because the NMC matrix explicitly excludes INIs such as the AIIMS institutions. The original draft's 1,36,939 figure therefore needs this scope attached to it.
Seat-Count Rule
When comparing seat numbers, use this sequence:
NMC matrix seats β†’ INI seats outside that matrix β†’ college intake β†’ quota seats β†’ category seats
A large national seat number does not mean an individual candidate has the same probability of admission at every medical college. For a national college shortlist beyond seat totals, use Top MBBS Colleges in India.

NEET UG 2026 Qualifying Cutoff for MBBS
The qualifying cutoff determines whether a student has qualified NEET. It is not the same as the cutoff needed to secure a specific MBBS college.

NEET Qualifying Cutoff vs MBBS College Cutoff
This distinction is essential for every MBBS aspirant.
NEET qualifying cutoff means the minimum qualifying standard.
MBBS college cutoff means the closing rank or score at which a particular seat was allotted for a particular college, category, quota and counselling round.
Therefore:
NEET qualified β‰  government MBBS guaranteed
and
NEET qualified β‰  preferred private MBBS guaranteed
A candidate should evaluate:
AIR β†’ Category β†’ Quota β†’ Domicile/Eligibility β†’ College β†’ Counselling Round β†’ Closing Rank
rather than using the qualifying marks alone.

MBBS Admission Process 2026
MBBS admission can be understood in six practical stages.
Step 1: Appear for NEET UG
Students first take NEET UG, the common undergraduate medical entrance examination administered by NTA.
Step 2: Receive NEET Score and AIR
After the result, the student receives the relevant NEET result information, including All India Rank.
Qualifying NEET creates eligibility for the applicable counselling process; it does not automatically allot a medical college. For rank, quota and round-wise interpretation, use NEET Cutoffs & Counselling.
Step 3: Register for the Correct Counselling
This is one of the most important parts of MBBS admission.
MCC Counselling
MCC handles national counselling streams including the applicable All India Quota, AIIMS, JIPMER, Central University and Deemed University seats covered under its counselling mandate. MCC's Session 2026 UG portal, Information Bulletin and AIQ/State schedules are live
State Counselling
State authorities handle the applicable state-quota and participating private medical-college seats according to their own eligibility, reservation and counselling rules.
A candidate can therefore need to follow MCC and a state counselling authority simultaneously.
Step 4: Fill College Preferences
Students should place colleges in their genuine preference order.
A useful list includes:
aspirational choices β†’ realistic choices β†’ safer acceptable choices
Students should compare previous closing AIR/rank with the same quota and category, not with an unrelated counselling route.
Step 5: Seat Allotment
The counselling system considers merit, eligibility, reservation, seat availability and submitted choices.
Step 6: Reporting and Fee Payment
After allotment, the candidate completes the applicable fee payment, document verification and reporting requirements within the counselling deadline.

MBBS Counselling 2026: Current Status
MCC's official portal is operating for Session 2026 and carries the UG Information Bulletin 2026 along with AIQ and state scheduling documents dated 1 August 2026.  For the complete national counselling flow, use NEET UG Counselling.
State MBBS counselling does not necessarily follow the same dates as MCC. Students applying through both routes need to track each authority separately because registration, choice filling, allotment and reporting windows can overlap.

MBBS Course Fees in India 2026
There is no single MBBS fee in India.
The cost changes according to:
college type + state + seat category + counselling route + tuition definition + hostel + compulsory charges

Sharda University currently lists β‚Ή15,23,183 as the first-year/yearly MBBS fee, while its fee information also identifies separate additional university charges.
Amrita's official 2026–27 Kochi MBBS schedule lists β‚Ή25 lakh annual General tuition and β‚Ή1.125 crore total tuition for the 4.5-year academic course period, with other fees and hostel/mess charged separately.

Government MBBS
Government colleges are generally heavily subsidised, although exact fees differ by state and institution.
The biggest financial benefit for many families is not necessarily finding India's absolute cheapest government college; it is securing any acceptable government MBBS seat instead of moving to a much higher private tuition commitment.

Private MBBS
Private MBBS can cost several lakhs per academic year. Fees may also differ by General, management, NRI or other notified seat categories.
A family must compare the complete financial commitment, not merely the first instalment.

Private MBBS Colleges Students May Compare in 2026
Students comparing private MBBS can look at established institutions such as Kasturba Medical College Manipal, Amrita School of Medicine and SRM Medical College, along with Sharda University Greater Noida, Noida International University (NIIMS) Greater Noida and Parul University Vadodara. Each should be evaluated on the exact counselling route, current NMC seat status, teaching-hospital exposure and complete fee rather than brand name alone.
Sharda currently lists MBBS for 2026 with NEET qualification and UPDGME allotment; Noida International University is running current MBBS academic examinations through NIIMS; and Parul Institute of Medical Sciences & Research continues to offer MBBS within Parul University. These are relevant private options, but they should still be compared with other medical colleges as part of a wider rank-and-budget shortlist.

Deemed University MBBS
Deemed-university seats are generally handled through MCC and can carry premium tuition.
Amrita's β‚Ή1.125 crore General-category tuition example shows why the total academic-period cost matters more than an isolated annual figure.

NMC Fee Clarification for 2026
NMC issued its fee-duration clarification on 7 April 2026. Students comparing private/deemed MBBS should use the current institutional fee schedule and verify how tuition is charged across the 4.5-year academic period rather than assuming a fee for all 5.5 years.

MBBS Subjects
The MBBS curriculum moves from understanding the normal human body to disease mechanisms and then to diagnosis, treatment and patient care.
Major subjects include:
  • Anatomy
  • Physiology
  • Biochemistry
  • Pathology
  • Pharmacology
  • Microbiology
  • Forensic Medicine
  • Community Medicine
  • General Medicine
  • General Surgery
  • Paediatrics
  • Obstetrics & Gynaecology
  • Orthopaedics
  • Ophthalmology
  • Otorhinolaryngology/ENT
  • Dermatology
  • Psychiatry
  • Respiratory Medicine
  • Anaesthesiology
  • Radiodiagnosis and other clinical disciplines
The exact teaching sequence, competencies, integration and assessment follow the applicable NMC CBME framework.

MBBS Syllabus & Course Structure
A useful way to understand the MBBS syllabus is by the progression of learning rather than treating it as a simple semester-wise list.

Learning Stage
Major Subjects / Areas
Main Focus
Basic Medical Sciences
Anatomy, Physiology, Biochemistry
Normal human body and its functions
Para-clinical Learning
Pathology, Pharmacology, Microbiology, Forensic Medicine, Community Medicine
Disease, medicines, infection and public health
Clinical Learning
Medicine, Surgery, Paediatrics, OBG, Orthopaedics, ENT, Ophthalmology and other clinical disciplines
Diagnosis, treatment and patient care
Internship
Rotating clinical postings
Supervised real-world medical practice
NMC's current regulatory page lists the CBME Curriculum 2024 and related clarifications. CBME integrates competency development and practical/clinical learning rather than treating MBBS as a purely theory-based course.
Basic Medical Sciences
Students first learn how the normal human body is structured and functions.
The key foundation subjects are:
Anatomy + Physiology + Biochemistry
Early medical education also increasingly connects basic science with later clinical application.
Para-Clinical Learning
Students then learn how disease develops, how microorganisms cause illness, how drugs work and how disease is diagnosed.
Important areas include:
Pathology + Pharmacology + Microbiology + Forensic Medicine + Community Medicine
Clinical MBBS
The later part of the programme becomes increasingly hospital-centred.
Students learn through disciplines such as:
Medicine + Surgery + Paediatrics + Obstetrics & Gynaecology + Orthopaedics + Ophthalmology + ENT
along with exposure to other clinical specialties.

MBBS Internship
After completing the academic programme, students undergo a one-year Compulsory Rotating Medical Internship (CRMI).
The internship gives supervised exposure to real clinical work and typically includes rotations across major hospital and community-health disciplines. NMC maintains dedicated CRMI regulations as part of the undergraduate regulatory framework.
Do MBBS Interns Get a Stipend?
Internship stipend is not one fixed India-wide amount. It varies by institution, state and college type.
NMC continues to issue directions relating to disclosure and payment of stipends to MBBS interns and postgraduate residents, including a March 2026 compliance notice.
When comparing expensive private/deemed colleges, stipend is useful information, but it should not outweigh tuition, teaching-hospital quality and admission suitability.

Top MBBS Colleges in India 2026
The latest published national benchmark remains NIRF Medical 2025.
However, NIRF ranks medical institutions, not the MBBS programme separately. Therefore, copying the overall NIRF Medical Top 10 unchanged creates a problem: PGIMER, SGPGIMS and NIMHANS rank very highly but are not normal undergraduate MBBS-entry choices.
An MBBS-focused shortlist should filter the ranking to institutions that actually provide an MBBS route.

For detailed rankings, seats, fees and historical NEET closing AIR, combine the national shortlist with your actual counselling route and budget.

Best MBBS Colleges by State
Most MBBS candidates eventually need a state-level comparison because state quota, domicile rules, fees, counselling and private-college structures vary significantly.
Instead of opening several state pages at once, use MBBS Colleges by State 2026 to compare seat depth, fees and counselling routes, then open the relevant state guide for your AIR, domicile and budget.
A state guide becomes most useful after the student knows:
NEET AIR + category + domicile/eligibility + budget

How to Choose the Best MBBS College
1. Start With NEET AIR
Marks-to-rank relationships can change sharply between examination years.
For counselling decisions, AIR is generally more useful than comparing only last year's marks.
2. Identify the Correct Counselling Route
Find out whether the seat is under:
MCC AIQ, AIIMS/JIPMER, Central University, Deemed University, state quota or a participating private-college route.
MCC and state counselling should never be treated as one identical admission pool.
3. Compare the Teaching Hospital
MBBS is a clinical professional degree.
A functioning teaching hospital with strong patient flow, emergency exposure, varied departments and diverse clinical cases can matter more than premium-looking campus infrastructure.
4. Calculate the Complete MBBS Cost
A β‚Ή20 lakh annual tuition fee is not a β‚Ή20 lakh education decision.
Families must add:
tuition + compulsory institutional charges + hostel + mess + deposits + living costs
for the relevant course period.
5. Compare Seat Intake and Historical Cutoff Together
A college with 250 seats can still close at a much stronger rank than a college with 100 seats if candidate demand is significantly higher.
6. Use Enough Choices
Candidates close to the government-seat range should not restrict themselves to only five famous institutions.
A properly ordered longer list can substantially improve the chance of securing an acceptable lower-cost seat.

Government vs Private MBBS: Which Is Better?

Rank-sensitive

Best suited to
Competitive rank + cost priority
Eligible rank + adequate long-term budget
If a student can secure a strong government seat, the financial advantage can be enormous.
Private MBBS is not automatically a poor choice. It becomes a reasonable option when the government-seat range is unrealistic, the institution and teaching hospital are acceptable, and the family can fund the complete course without creating unsustainable financial pressure. For a national shortlist of private options, use Private MBBS Colleges.

Is MBBS a Difficult Course?
MBBS is academically and practically demanding.
Students have to manage a large volume of scientific knowledge, practical examinations, hospital postings, patient interaction, professional examinations and eventually clinical responsibilities.
MBBS generally suits students who are comfortable with:
Biology + long-term study + hospital environments + patient interaction + responsibility + continuous learning
Choosing MBBS only because medicine is considered a respected profession is not enough. The student's interest in actual clinical work matters.

MBBS Specialisations
There is an important misconception around β€œMBBS specialisation”.
Students do not normally choose General Medicine, Surgery, Dermatology or Radiology as an MBBS specialisation at undergraduate admission.
MBBS provides broad undergraduate medical training. Specialisation normally follows MBBS through postgraduate education.

What to Do After MBBS
After MBBS, graduates can move into several routes rather than following one compulsory career path.
Junior Residency or Hospital Employment
Eligible MBBS graduates can apply for Junior Resident and other hospital-based roles subject to registration and recruitment requirements.
Medical Officer Roles
Government departments, hospitals and health organisations recruit MBBS-qualified doctors for Medical Officer and similar positions under their respective rules.
MD
MD provides postgraduate training in medical and related specialties. For postgraduate admission planning after MBBS, see NEET PG.
MS
MS is a major postgraduate route for surgical specialties.
DNB
DNB provides another recognised postgraduate speciality pathway.
Public Health, Research and Administration
Graduates can later move towards public health, research, healthcare administration and academic pathways, often with additional qualifications.

MBBS Doctor Salary in India 2026
There is no single official β€œMBBS salary in India.”
Salary depends on role, state, hospital, employer, experience, allowances, duty pattern and whether the doctor has postgraduate qualifications.
Instead of publishing a weak nationwide average, a better approach is to use a real institutional benchmark.
Official Junior Resident Pay Example
VMMC & Safdarjung Hospital's official notice dated 18 February 2026 lists the following monthly Junior Resident pay and allowances:

Junior Resident Component
Published Amount
Basic Pay
β‚Ή56,100
Total Pay + Listed Allowances
β‚Ή1,34,572/month
The total includes the basic pay plus the NPA, HRA, DA and TA amounts shown in the VMMC/Safdarjung notice. This is a specific central-government hospital example, not an India-wide starting salary
Private-hospital salaries can differ widely by employer, location, duty hours and role, so quoting one generic private-sector figure as the national β€œMBBS salary” would be misleading.

Salary Reality
Medicine is a long career pathway.
Income can change materially after:
PG specialisation + seniority + hospital experience + consultancy + private practice. For AIIMS and other INI postgraduate routes, see INI-CET.
This is why MBBS should not be judged like a B.Tech or MBA programme purely by first-job salary.

Is MBBS Worth It in 2026?
MBBS can be highly worthwhile for a student who genuinely wants medicine and understands the time, competition and financial commitment.
It makes stronger sense when the student:
  • genuinely wants patient-facing medical work;
  • is comfortable with a long training period;
  • can handle demanding science and clinical education;
  • wants a long-term professional medical career; and
  • can secure an economically sensible seat.
The decision requires more scrutiny when a private/deemed seat would create severe financial stress or the student is choosing medicine mainly because of family pressure.
A low-fee government MBBS seat and a β‚Ή1 crore+ tuition commitment are fundamentally different financial decisions even though both ultimately lead towards the same undergraduate qualification.

MBBS vs BDS vs BAMS vs BHMS
These courses all belong to healthcare education but lead to different regulated professional pathways.

NEET UG
MBBS
Modern medicine & surgery

BDS
Dentistry

BAMS
Ayurveda
Required
BHMS
Homoeopathy
Required
NTA's current NEET framework covers MBBS/BDS and also the specified AYUSH undergraduate routes, including BAMS and BHMS.
A student who specifically wants to practise modern medicine should view MBBS as a distinct professional pathway, not simply choose another health degree because its cutoff may be lower.

Can You Become a Doctor Without MBBS?
The answer depends on what is meant by β€œdoctor”.
For practising modern medicine through the standard Indian undergraduate medical route, MBBS is the core qualification, followed by the applicable registration requirements.
BDS, BAMS and BHMS are separate regulated professional qualifications for dentistry, Ayurveda and homoeopathy respectively. They should not be described as interchangeable versions of MBBS.

Advantages of the MBBS Course
MBBS provides a clear professional route based on a combination of:
medical science + clinical skills + patient interaction + diagnosis + healthcare decision-making + hospital experience
The qualification can lead to eligible medical employment and also forms the base for postgraduate routes such as MD, MS and DNB.

Challenges of the MBBS Course
The commitment is significantly greater than simply clearing NEET.
Students face:
  • a long initial training period;
  • demanding examinations;
  • large volumes of medical knowledge;
  • hospital and clinical responsibilities;
  • potentially high private tuition;
  • and additional years of education if specialisation is the goal.
The correct question is therefore not only:
β€œCan I get an MBBS seat?”
It is also:
β€œIs this particular MBBS seat academically, financially and personally sensible?”

How to Choose Between Two MBBS Colleges
When two medical colleges are close in your preference list, compare them in this order. For a structured side-by-side decision framework, use Compare Medical Colleges.
Recognition and Current Seat Status
Use current NMC records and the counselling seat matrix.
NMC maintains college/course information and published a fresh 2026–27 MBBS matrix in July 2026.
Teaching Hospital
Compare patient load, departments, emergency facilities and clinical case exposure.
Total Cost
Calculate the complete financial commitment, not only first-year tuition.
Historical Closing Rank
A college that consistently closes at much stronger ranks usually has higher candidate demand.
Location and Hostel
MBBS is a long course. Distance from home, travel connectivity, hostel arrangements and local environment can matter materially.
Academic and PG Preparation Environment
For students planning MD/MS/DNB later, academic culture and study environment can also influence preference.

Biggest MBBS Admission Mistakes
Treating NEET Qualification as a Good Admission Rank
The qualifying threshold is only the minimum examination standard. High-demand government colleges close at vastly stronger ranks.
Believing in Direct MBBS Admission Without NEET
NEET remains the national undergraduate medical entrance requirement.
Comparing Fees Without Matching the Fee Definition
Annual tuition, first-year payable amount and total course tuition are different figures.
Choosing Only by NIRF Rank
NIRF is useful for institutional comparison but does not tell a student whether the college is affordable or realistically available at their rank.
Ignoring State Counselling
Many candidates focus only on MCC even though state counselling can create additional government and private opportunities.
Filling Too Few Choices
Restricting a list to famous colleges can unnecessarily eliminate acceptable lower-preference seats.
Multiplying Annual Tuition by 5.5
The internship is part of the overall MBBS training pathway, but the fee-charging structure should be taken from the current official fee schedule rather than calculated blindly. NMC issued a specific fee-duration clarification in April 2026.

Candidates should use the current NEET UG 2026 qualifying-examination provisions rather than relying on old percentage tables copied from previous regulations. Match your qualification and subjects to the applicable current NTA/NMC rule and counselling authority.
7. Can PCB be taken as additional subjects for NEET?
The current bulletin permits the prescribed subjects to be studied as additional subjects after Class 12 from recognised boards, subject to the documentary requirements specified by NTA.
8. What is the minimum age for MBBS in 2026?
A candidate must satisfy the requirement of completing 17 years by 31 December of the admission year under the current NEET eligibility framework.
9. Is there an upper age limit for NEET/MBBS?
The current NEET UG framework does not impose a general upper-age ceiling.
10. Is NEET compulsory for private MBBS?
Yes. Private, deemed, management and NRI MBBS routes do not eliminate the NEET requirement.
11. Can I get MBBS admission without NEET?
There is no legitimate standard Indian MBBS admission route that bypasses NEET under the current system. NTA describes NEET as the common national entrance test for undergraduate medical education.
12. What is the NEET cutoff for MBBS in 2026?
The 2026 qualifying range is 715–213 for UR/EWS and 212–177 for OBC, SC and ST. College admission cutoffs can be far more competitive and depend on AIR, category, quota and counselling round.
13. How many candidates qualified NEET UG 2026?
NTA's official 2026 data reports 11,21,185 qualified candidates from 19,99,895 candidates who appeared.
14. How many MBBS seats are there in India in 2026?
NMC's published 2026–27 seat matrix covers about 1.37 lakh seats under the NMC matrix, but NMC explicitly labels the matrix as excluding Institutes of National Importance. It should therefore not be described as an all-inclusive count of every MBBS seat in India.
15. What are the fees for MBBS in India?
There is no single fee. Current official examples range from heavily subsidised government fees such as KGMU's β‚Ή54,600 General UG NEET amount to Amrita's β‚Ή25 lakh annual General tuition.
16. Can MBBS tuition cost more than β‚Ή1 crore?
Yes. Amrita's official 2026–27 Kochi schedule lists β‚Ή1.125 crore total General-category tuition over the 4.5-year academic course period, excluding the complete impact of additional fees and living expenses.
17. Are MBBS fees charged during internship?
NMC issued a clarification on 7 April 2026 concerning fees chargeable for MBBS course duration. Students should use the official fee schedule and should not assume tuition is chargeable for all 5.5 years.
18. What are the main MBBS subjects?
Major subjects include Anatomy, Physiology, Biochemistry, Pathology, Pharmacology, Microbiology, Forensic Medicine, Community Medicine, Medicine, Surgery, Paediatrics, Obstetrics & Gynaecology, Orthopaedics, Ophthalmology and ENT, alongside other clinical disciplines under the CBME framework.

There is no universal starting salary. As one official example, VMMC & Safdarjung's February 2026 notice lists β‚Ή1,34,572 total monthly pay and allowances for a Junior Resident, including β‚Ή56,100 basic pay. This is an institution-specific government benchmark, not a national average.
21. Can I specialise immediately during MBBS?
MBBS itself provides broad undergraduate medical education. Specialisation normally follows MBBS through postgraduate routes such as MD, MS or DNB.
22. What is the difference between MBBS and MD?
MBBS is the undergraduate medical qualification. MD is postgraduate specialty training pursued after MBBS in eligible disciplines.
23. Is NExT compulsory for MBBS students in 2026?
NMC lists the National Exit Test Regulations, 2023, but its regulatory history also includes the public notice deferring NExT. Students should not assume a proposed implementation timeline has automatically replaced the currently notified system unless NMC issues an applicable implementation direction.
24. Has MBBS counselling 2026 started?
MCC's official Session 2026 UG Medical Counselling portal is active and currently carries the 2026 Information Bulletin and counselling schedules. State counselling runs separately through the respective state authorities.

Final Verdict: Is MBBS the Right Course for You?
MBBS remains the core undergraduate medical pathway for students who want to build a career in modern medicine in India.
The pathway is approximately 5.5 years including internship, admission is through NEET UG, and getting a desirable medical college depends far more on AIR, category, counselling route, seat availability and choice strategy than merely qualifying NEET.
For students with strong ranks, a government medical college can provide an extremely attractive combination of low fees, strong patient exposure and recognised medical training.
For students considering private or deemed MBBS, the decision requires much deeper financial analysis. Current official examples range from a subsidised government fee of β‚Ή54,600 at KGMU for General UG NEET routes to β‚Ή25 lakh annual tuition and β‚Ή1.125 crore total academic-period tuition at Amrita.
The right MBBS decision sequence is:
NEET AIR β†’ Category β†’ Counselling Eligibility β†’ Realistic Colleges β†’ Teaching Hospital β†’ Historical Cutoff β†’ Seat Type β†’ Complete MBBS Cost β†’ Preference Order
Students who have decided on MBBS should next compare the strongest national options and then narrow the shortlist state-wise according to rank, location preference, budget and counselling eligibility.
