UPES was established in 2003 through the UPES Act of the Uttarakhand State Legislature and operates as a UGC-recognised private university. Its academic structure currently covers seven schools across engineering, computer science, business, law, design, health sciences and liberal studies.
The 2025 placement data is highly school-dependent. The School of Computer Science recorded the highest school-level package of INR 52 LPA, while the university’s current promotional INR 1.3 crore figure relates to an alumnus and should not be treated as the normal placement outcome for the current graduating batch.

Quick Decision Snapshot

  • Fees: Premium private-university pricing, with major regular programmes ranging from about INR 2.28 Lakh to above INR 20 Lakh.
  • Admission: Mixed route using UPES entrance tests, national exams, CUET and academic merit depending on the programme.
  • Placement: Outcomes vary sharply by school; Computer Science and Business currently report the higher package levels.
  • Best For: Profiles targeting CSE, energy-sector engineering, management, law, design or multidisciplinary private-university study.
  • Overall Value: More relevant when programme fit and specialised curriculum justify the fee; less suitable when lowest possible tuition is the main priority.

Overview

UPES Dehradun is mainly defined by professional programmes in engineering, computer science, management, law, design, health sciences and liberal studies. Its roots in energy and petroleum education have expanded into a much broader multidisciplinary university model.
Admission is not controlled by one entrance examination. B.Tech, MBA, law, design and other programmes have different combinations of UPES entrance tests, JEE Main, CAT, CLAT, CUET, board merit and programme-specific selection stages.
The university fits profiles comfortable with private-university fees and looking for specialised professional programmes within a residential Dehradun ecosystem. The key limitation is that placement performance and fee-to-outcome value differ considerably across schools.

Courses and Fees

UPES has a wide regular-campus portfolio covering undergraduate, postgraduate, integrated and doctoral programmes. Total tuition varies substantially by programme and specialisation, with engineering, law and design generally at the higher end.

Admission Process

UPES admission is entrance-based, merit-based or mixed depending on the programme. For example, B.Tech uses UPESEAT along with JEE Main, board merit and other recognised pathways, while MBA uses UPESMET or accepted national management exams followed by the applicable selection process.
For the 2026–27 cycle, the published last date for many major programmes including B.Tech, BBA, B.Pharm, law, MBA, M.Tech, MCA, M.Sc, MA and design programmes was 31 July 2026. Therefore, as of 7 August 2026, these should not be described as generally open unless UPES issues a separate extension or later-round notice.

How to Apply

  1. Register on the UPES admission portal and select the required programme.
  2. Enter personal and academic details in the application form.
  3. Pay the prescribed application fee and complete submission.
  4. Appear for the applicable UPES entrance test or submit an eligible national-exam, CUET or academic-merit route.
  5. Complete the interview, portfolio evaluation or other programme-specific selection stage where required.
  6. Receive the admission offer after successful selection.
  7. Pay the required admission or seat-confirmation amount.
  8. Complete document verification and final university registration.

Documents Required

  • Class 10 marksheet and certificate
  • Class 12 marksheet and certificate
  • Graduation marksheets and degree for PG admission
  • Entrance exam scorecard, where required
  • Government identity proof
  • Transfer or migration certificate, where required
  • Uttarakhand domicile certificate for domicile benefits
  • Category certificate, where relevant
  • Passport-size photographs

Cut-Offs & Admission Trends

UPES does not follow one common cutoff for all programmes. The 2026 admission model gives several courses an alternative route through UPES tests, national exams, CUET or academic merit, which reduces dependence on one examination score.
The figures below are admission-route thresholds or exemption benchmarks, not a prediction that every applicant at that score will receive a seat.

Course and Entrance Exam
Latest Cut-Off
B.Tech — JEE Main 2026
50 percentile for direct-admission route
B.Tech Mathematics & Computing — JEE Main 2026

UG/Integrated Programs — CUET-UG 2026

MBA — NMAT
120 score
B.Pharm — JEE Main 2026

M.Des — CEED 2026

The admission difficulty therefore depends heavily on programme demand. CSE, specialised B.Tech branches, MBA and law can face stronger competition, while the availability of multiple selection routes gives eligible profiles more than one path to admission.

Scholarships

UPES scholarships for 2026–27 include board-merit awards, national-exam scholarships, Uttarakhand domicile support, MBA merit scholarships and alumni benefits. These are linked to defined scores, seat limits or continuation conditions rather than automatic admission.

The MBA scholarship pool is limited and includes first-come, first-served conditions for specified seats. Alumni continuation requires the prescribed academic performance and no backlog.

Placements

The latest 2025 placement picture shows major differences between UPES schools. Computer Science had the highest school-level package, while Business, Engineering, Law, Design, Health Sciences and Liberal Studies reported different package bands.
UPES also runs its EDGE career-readiness system with aptitude preparation, resume and LinkedIn work, mock interviews, boot camps and industry mentoring. This matters because placement outcomes depend on the school, specialisation, profile and recruiter requirements rather than admission alone.

Accreditations & Rankings

UPES combines statutory university recognition, programme-level professional recognition and national/international rankings. These credentials need to be read separately because UGC recognition, NAAC accreditation, professional approvals and NIRF ranking measure different things.

Career Outcomes

Career paths at UPES are strongly programme-dependent. CSE graduates move towards software, AI, data and cyber roles, while the university's older sector strengths continue to support energy, petroleum and infrastructure careers.
Business, law, design and health programmes create separate employment tracks, so a university-wide placement headline has limited value without matching it to the programme being considered.

Common Roles
Computer Science
Software Engineer, Data Analyst, AI/ML Engineer, Cybersecurity Analyst; technology
Petroleum & Energy
Petroleum Engineer, Reservoir Engineer, Energy Analyst; oil, gas and energy
Core Engineering

Recruiters

UPES recruiter participation covers technology, consulting, banking, professional services and other sectors. Recruiter relevance changes by school; a technology employer visiting the university should not be assumed to recruit equally from law, design, health and management programmes.

Is University of Petroleum and Energy Studies UPES Dehradun the Right Fit in 2026?

UPES is positioned above a basic regional private-college choice in fees, academic breadth and specialised programme variety. Its clearest differentiators remain Computer Science, engineering with energy-sector depth, management, law and design, while placement outcomes need to be judged school by school.
The university is more suitable for a family willing to pay private-university tuition for programme choice, campus infrastructure and specialised curriculum. It becomes harder to justify when the main requirement is low fees or when an applicant already has access to a stronger lower-cost public institution.

Who Should Consider UPES Dehradun?
UPES fits best when its programme-specific strengths match the intended career direction.
  • CSE applicants targeting AI, data science, cyber security, cloud, DevOps or emerging technology tracks.
  • Engineering profiles interested in petroleum, energy, safety, sustainability, aerospace or specialised core-engineering areas.
  • MBA applicants looking beyond a generic MBA towards energy, aviation, logistics, analytics or consulting-oriented programmes.
  • Law or design applicants who want these schools inside a broader multidisciplinary private university.
  • Families comfortable with a tuition budget that can cross INR 20 Lakh for premium programmes.

Who May Prefer Other Colleges?
Other institutions can fit better when UPES's specific advantages do not justify its cost.
  • Applicants whose first priority is the lowest possible tuition and hostel expense.
  • Profiles already securing a suitable IIT, NIT, NLU or other high-value public institution.
  • Students judging placement value only from the INR 1.3 crore alumni headline rather than their own school's placement data.
  • Applicants wanting a narrowly specialised institution instead of a large multidisciplinary university.
  • Families expecting similar placement outcomes across every UPES school.
UPES is worth considering in 2026 when the chosen programme, specialisation and likely career outcome justify the fee—not simply because of the university-wide brand or highest-package headline.

Alumni

UPES maintains alumni engagement through mentoring, career interaction, professional networking and entrepreneurship links. The alumni base spans engineering, law, design, business and other disciplines rather than being concentrated in the university's original petroleum-focused programmes.
Several graduates now hold senior corporate, legal, product and entrepreneurial roles.
